Mission-Driven Storytelling

Mission-Driven Storytelling teaches leaders to turn company mission, values, and change into stories that stick and drive people to act. Drawing on research from "Made to Stick" and cognitive science, participants learn why stories outperform facts and arguments, then build their own using frameworks including SUCCESs, the Story Spine, the Moment-Struggle-Shift-Message structure, and the Decker Grid for audience analysis. Practice centers on a recurring Oracle software rollout scenario for change communication and a Signature Travel scenario for mission storytelling, with the underlying skills generalizing to any leadership moment — onboarding, feedback, performance conversations, or organizational change. Participants repeatedly draft, tell, and retell personal and professional stories in pairs and small groups, adapting them for different audiences and building a reusable "story bank" or personal story playbook (Origin, Impact, Vision) they can draw on going forward.

Story Spine

4 exercises · ~31 min

This module teaches the Story Spine framework, a nine-beat structure ("Once upon a time... Every day... But, one day... Because of that... Because of that... Because of that... Until, finally... And, ever since then... The end.") for building stories with a clear takeaway or moral. Participants first reflect on their own storytelling ability, then learn the structure, then practice it live in groups of three, improvising a story one line at a time without contradicting what came before, and closing with a stated moral. The module wraps with participants applying the spine to their own life stories.

Storytelling Structure

7 exercises · ~30 min

This module teaches a four-part storytelling structure ??? The Moment, The Struggle, The Shift, The Message ??? for communicating organizational change. Exercises are built around an Oracle software transition scenario, but the structure generalizes to any change communication a leader needs to deliver. Participants first practice the structure on a personal story with a strong emotion, then apply it directly to their own change story, and practice adapting that same story for three different audiences (boss, peer managers, frontline team) using concrete, personal language rather than abstract business terms. The module closes with the "Uncertain Leader" framework for telling a change story even when the leader doesn't yet have all the answers.

Storytelling Appendix: New Ideas

8 exercises

This appendix module builds out a personal/startup storytelling playbook and gives participants practice simplifying complex ideas into memorable stories. Participants work through the inputs (protagonist, obstacle, insight, value proposition) and outputs (sensory detail, metaphor, plot, structure) that go into a strong story, then practice using AI tools to generate a polished product story from a defined set of inputs (product details, audience, USP, brand voice, and more). Hands-on exercises have small groups distill complex topics like quantum physics, blockchain, or climate change into a single icon, a 30-second elevator pitch, or a simplifying analogy, plus a game combining random everyday objects into an unexpected pitch. The module also references Chip and Dan Heath's SUCCESs formula and the Story Spine structure, along with further reading on storytelling in leadership.

Audience

3 exercises · ~28 min

This module teaches the Decker Grid, a framework for analyzing an audience before you communicate with them. Participants pick a real, recurring audience and work through four questions: who they are (three descriptive adjectives), the point of view or single "ask" you want them to take away, the concrete actions you want them to take, and the benefit that makes them care. Participants then pair up to share their analysis and give each other rapid-fire feedback.

Filling up your "Personal Story Playbook"

4 exercises · ~48 min

This module teaches participants to build a personal repertoire of true stories they can draw on in professional settings, organized around three types: Origin stories (where something started, showing values), Impact stories (where things stand now, showing results), and Vision stories (where things are headed, showing what's ahead and how challenges will be met). Rather than writing stories from scratch, participants learn to find true stories from their own life, career, or things they've heard, and shape them using the Story Spine structure. Working in pairs or trios, participants take turns as Storyteller and Listener(s), telling a planned story while listeners identify key takeaways and give feedback on what the story communicates and how it inspires.

Change Vision Storytelling

8 exercises · ~32 min

This module teaches participants to craft and deliver stories that articulate a change vision. Participants learn a Story Spine (Once upon a time / Every day / But, one day / Because of that / Until finally / And ever since then) and a Moment-Struggle-Shift-Message story structure, then practice building and telling their own change vision story in paired exercises, giving and incorporating feedback, and retelling the story to different audiences (DISC styles, job roles, experience levels, and Conserver/Pragmatist/Originator listener types). The module also covers plot types (Challenge, Connection, Creativity, from "Made to Stick"), the three "playbook" story categories (origin, impact, vision), and how to identify the moral or takeaway a story should show rather than tell.

Pre-work: Storytelling

1 exercise

This pre-work module prepares participants for a Mission-Driven Storytelling workshop by introducing why storytelling matters for leaders. Participants watch two short Simon Sinek videos on leadership storytelling, then reflect on a memorable work story from their own experience and what made it stick. It is built around an Oracle software rollout scenario: participants think through the concerns their team may have about the change and draft an early version of a 2-minute change story using a Moment/Struggle structure, work that generalizes to communicating any organizational change.

Storytelling Introduction

5 exercises · ~12 min

This module introduces the core skills of mission-driven storytelling: using stories to make a point stick and drive an audience to act. Participants warm up by sharing personal check-ins and telling the story behind their own name, surfacing how a unique point of view shapes a story's impact. The module is built around a Signature Travel workplace scenario, where participants ultimately draft and tell a two-minute personal story that demonstrates a company value or mission; the structure and techniques generalize to telling any impactful, action-driving story in a professional setting.

Why Stories?

9 exercises · ~42 min

This module makes the case for why storytelling works as a leadership and communication tool, grounded in research from "Made to Stick" (Chip and Dan Heath) and cognitive science on learning. Participants examine why stories stick better than facts or arguments ??? because they act as "flight simulators for the brain," provide simulation (knowledge of how to act) and inspiration (motivation to act), and invite audiences to participate rather than debate. The module applies these ideas directly to HR leaders and people managers, showing how story can reinforce culture (onboarding, performance reviews, change communications, DEI efforts) and build psychological safety on teams. Participants analyze real examples, including the iPhone launch keynote and a Blue Angels video, to identify these storytelling elements in action, then discuss how to apply simulation and inspiration to drive their own teams to act.

Mission Driven Storytelling

4 exercises · ~14 min

This module teaches leaders to turn company mission and values into memorable, personal stories rather than abstract statements. Participants examine real examples???like a failure story that built trust during a change rollout, a short story that reset a team's feedback norms, and an onboarding story that became cultural lore???to see how narrative builds belonging, trust, and psychological safety. Participants then apply this to their own organization's mission by identifying moments that show (rather than tell) their values, and practice framing those stories around what they want an audience to understand (simulate) and what action they want that audience to take (motivate).

Storytelling Tools

10 exercises · ~59 min

This module teaches how to build and deliver memorable stories using the SUCCESs framework (Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, Stories) and the neuroscience behind why stories stick (dopamine and oxytocin release in both teller and listener). Participants practice mining personal experience and engaging all five senses plus the "thinking mind" to make descriptions vivid, first through a childhood-place description exercise in small groups, then by applying storytelling to a client project case study and a true-or-false object story game. The module also covers virtual delivery tips???background, camera placement, physicality, and vocal warm-up???for telling stories on camera.

Practice: Putting it All Together

3 exercises · ~45 min

This module has participants build and practice a personal story that illustrates a company mission, using the SUCCESs framework (Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, Story) to make it memorable and a Decker Grid to define audience, point of view, and desired action. It is built around a specific mission-driven storytelling scenario ("Make learning come to life"), and the structures generalize to telling any mission, values, or change story in a workplace setting. Participants draft their story, share it with a partner for rapid-fire feedback, then practice retelling it using techniques for reclaiming past moments, defining change, and landing a clear controlling idea. The module also covers building an ongoing "story bank" by logging stories tied to strong workplace emotions, and applying storytelling to real leadership conversations about values, culture, and change.

Recap and Closing - Mission-Driven Storytelling

3 exercises

This closing module wraps up the Mission-Driven Storytelling workshop by having participants reflect on what they learned and commit to applying one storytelling tool with themselves or their team in the coming week. Participants revisit the session's core skills — sharpening a personal point of view, using sensory details to spark imagination, and using descriptive language to build emotional connection — and consider how these tools extend beyond the workshop into ongoing manager and team communication, such as onboarding, performance conversations, and change communication.
