Workshop

Accountability and Curiosity

This workshop builds a personal, working definition of accountability and pairs it with curiosity as the mindset that keeps ownership alive under pressure. Participants move from defining accountability in their own words and recognizing it in others, to using the Accountability Ladder to diagnose below-the-line behaviors (Lack of Awareness, Blame, Excuses, Hope) and coach people toward above-the-line ones (Acknowledge, Ownership, Find a Solution, Make It Happen). Toyota's Andon Cord grounds a discussion of psychological safety and how DISC style shapes willingness to speak up, while the "I Wonder, What If, Let's Try" framework turns curiosity into concrete, testable action. A dedicated module addresses holding peers accountable without formal authority, and the workshop closes with participants committing to one specific accountability action to apply immediately.

Accountability: Opening

3 exercises · ~32 min

This opening module for the Accountability and Curiosity workshop gets participants defining accountability in their own words before layering on formal frameworks. Through pre-work reflection (including a self-check on personal "blown fuse" moments) and a small-group breakout, participants share their own definitions of accountability, identify specific behaviors they've seen from people who model it well, and practice recognizing accountability in others through direct, specific call-outs.

Understanding Accountability

5 exercises · ~47 min

This module distinguishes responsibility (what's on your job description) from accountability (the personal choice to own an outcome when circumstances get in the way). Participants learn a shared working definition of accountability and use the Accountability Ladder ??? a model spanning below-the-line stages (Lack of Awareness, Blame, Excuses, Hope) to above-the-line stages (Acknowledge, Ownership, Find a Solution, Make It Happen) ??? to identify where behavior sits and how to coach someone up a rung with targeted open-ended questions. Practice includes a "Vote with Your Feet" activity built around customer-service case studies (a rep who assumes someone else will respond to a customer, a directionless cross-functional team) where participants place behaviors on the ladder and script coaching responses; the ladder and coaching questions generalize to any team or workplace situation where ownership breaks down.

Risk Taking and Psychological Safety

2 exercises · ~30 min

This module uses Toyota's Andon Cord as a case study for psychological safety and accountability. Participants watch video footage of how the Andon Cord empowers any factory worker to stop the production line the moment something is wrong, then work in small groups to identify their own team's equivalent ??? a way to flag a problem early, admit they don't yet have the solution, and ask for help before it creates downstream impact. Groups also discuss what makes it safe to "pull the cord" in their own context, and how their DISC profile shapes their comfort with speaking up and owning outcomes.

Curiosity

3 exercises · ~28 min

This module teaches curiosity as a practice that builds accountability, using open questions, deep listening, and a sense of awe as entry points. Participants learn the "I Wonder, What If, Let's Try" structure ??? moving from individual wondering to group-generated possibilities to a small, testable action ??? and practice it in trios, starting with personal "I wonder" questions, narrowing to a shared "what if," and designing a concrete experiment to explore it.

Closing: Accountability and Curiosity

2 exercises · ~15 min

This closing module helps participants consolidate the day's accountability and curiosity tools and commit to applying one immediately. Participants review the Accountability Ladder, above/below the line behaviors, psychological safety concepts (including the andon cord idea from Toyota's approach), and curiosity habits like open questions and "I wonder / What if / Let's try" framing. In a paired discussion with a new partner, participants identify what became clearer during the day and name one specific tool or action they will use that week to take more ownership of a role, task, or process, then share it with the full group as a personal commitment.

Accountability without Authority

1 exercise · ~15 min

This module teaches how to hold peers accountable when you have no formal authority over them???the common case of one individual contributor needing another IC to follow through on something. Working from the core tension "I need you to do something, it's not my job, I can't make you do it," participants learn approaches for driving action through influence rather than positional power.
